In contrast to the Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) MRI sequence, which uses only one inversion pulse in order to attenuate the signal of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the Double Inversion Recovery (DIR) sequence uses two of them, in order to attenuates both the CSF and the white matter. The sequence is useful in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), especially for detecting mixed gray matter-white matter lesions (green circle) and lesions in the infratentorial region (Wattjes et al. AJNR 2007).
