The prestigious American university will host 350 academic, industrial, political, and social leaders in Boston October 5-8, 2015, the goal being to come up with innovative solutions to the major problems facing humanity.
The event, known as SOLVE, is the initiative of Professor Rafael Reif, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The members of the SOLVE community will put forward specific solutions to the big challenges facing the modern world: Learn, Cure, Fuel, and Make.
As a 36 year old Belgian entrepreneur, Dr. Laurent Hermoye, professor of brain imaging, founder and CEO of the neuroimaging company Imagilys, has been invited to take part in the initiative.
“This invitation from MIT really means a lot to me”, says Laurent Hermoye. “In professional terms, it is a form of recognition for the expertise I have gained through working at the forefront of brain imaging over the past 14 years. In human terms, it is a unique opportunity to make my contribution to the building of a better world, alongside people who, together, have the vision, intelligence, and power to change the world.”
The invited guests include Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google; Ian Read, CEO of Pfizer; and Ratan Tata, former Chairman of the Indian industrial giant Tata Sons.
The Cure axis, in which Laurent Hermoye will be involved, is chaired by Dr. Phillip Sharp, Professor at MIT, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, and co-founder of the biotechnology company Biogen.
“My contribution will be primarily focused on the development of biomarkers so that the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases can be improved. Psychiatric disorders merit special attention: this is a major public health issue, yet the mechanisms and means of treating such disorders are still not well understood”, adds Laurent Hermoye.
The members of the SOLVE community will meet every year at MIT in order to measure the progress toward solving the challenges that they have taken on.
