fMRI synchronization interface

fMRI synchronization box

In fMRI experiments, stimuli are presented to the patient during the sequential acquisition of EPI brain volumes. The synchronization of the stimuli with the image acquisition is of essential importance. Although the stimulation computer's internal clock could be used, time shifts often occur between the stimulation and imaging. The only way to solve this problem is to use synchronization pulses that are regularly sent by the MR scanner to the stimulation computer. Most MR systems can deliver these pulses but cannot be directly connected to the stimulation computer. An electronic interface is therefore necessary to process the synchonization pulse coming from the scanner and input it into the stimulation computer.

Inputs

TTL pulse on coxial cable (Philips), Optic pulse on fiber (Siemens), RS-422 interface (GE)

Outputs

USB interface (viewed by the stimulation software as a serial port), scanner external trigger (if supported)
